How to Choose Steel Warehouse Shelving for Cartons and Stockrooms
KAYOU WAREHOUSE STORAGE GUIDE
By KAYOU
For cartons and bins picked by hand, start with adjustable steel shelving and size each bay around the goods you handle most often. If your operation moves full pallets or long rolls, specify the storage system around the load carrier and handling method.
The three photographs in this guide show a carton warehouse, a four-tier shelving run and a roll storage aisle. Each highlights a different decision to make before requesting a quote.

What the Three Storage Layouts Show
| Storage application | What you can see | What to confirm before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Carton warehouse | Cartons on elevated levels, with palletized cartons in floor positions along the same run. | Whether stock is picked as individual cartons or moved as full pallets. Give the supplier both carton and loaded pallet dimensions if your operation uses both. |
| Four-tier steel shelving | Blue braced upright frames, orange beams and four solid shelf levels. | Clear shelf width and depth, the number of usable levels, and enough room to place and retrieve the tallest carton. |
| Rolled goods warehouse | Wrapped rolls on multiple rack levels, with some bundles supported on load carriers. | Roll length, diameter, weight, bundle size and how the goods are supported and handled. |
Where Four-Tier Steel Shelving Fits
A solid shelf surface is practical for hand-picked cartons, parts bins and smaller packages. Adjustable beam positions let you plan a taller opening for bulky cartons and shorter openings for small bins in the same bay. Typical applications include e-commerce stockrooms, spare parts stores and distribution areas with manual picking.

KAYOU's adjustable metal shelving product page lists three-, four- and five-level options and a configuration-dependent range of 100–500 kg per level under uniformly distributed load (UDL). For procurement, use the capacity stated for the specific bay quoted.
Will Six Cartons Fit on One Shelf?
Suppose each carton is 400 mm wide, 300 mm deep and 250 mm high, and weighs 18 kg when full.
Three across and two deep require a 1,200 × 600 mm footprint before allowing for handling clearance.
The six cartons weigh 108 kg in total. This is the planned stock weight on that level.
Compare those dimensions with the clear usable shelf area on the supplier's drawing. If workers need frequent access to the back row, compare a single-depth arrangement before ordering.
Ask for the rated load per level and per complete bay for the quoted configuration. UDL describes weight spread evenly across the shelf. If the goods bear on small feet, runners or a narrow support area, give the supplier the actual contact pattern for review. For industrial racking, the UK's HSE guidance also recommends identifying the maximum load and the applicable loading configuration.

Specify Rolled Goods Around Their Supports
For a roll storage project, tell the supplier whether the goods arrive individually wrapped, bundled, cradled or palletized. Include the heaviest roll or bundle, where the load contacts the support, and the equipment used to place it. That information helps the supplier assess the support arrangement and whether the goods need measures to prevent movement. For long materials that need open-front access, consider KAYOU cantilever racking as a separate configuration to evaluate.

What to Include in a Bulk Shelving RFQ
For a project order, ask for a dimensioned layout, the approved load ratings, a component list and installation requirements. If you are comparing suppliers for resale, request carton dimensions and gross weights for the same configuration so you can compare shipping costs on an equivalent basis.
