Yes. Steel shelving uprights and beams can be packed in reinforced corrugated cartons when the carton and its inner supports are designed for the length and weight of the steel parts. For suitable knock-down shelving models, KAYOU can quote reinforced carton packing based on the component sizes, order quantity and shipping route.
If your quote lists “carton packing,” ask which parts are boxed. Shelf panels may be in cartons while the uprights and beams are wrapped as separate bundles. Specify full carton enclosure for the uprights and beams if that is what your warehouse or distribution process requires.

What does a reinforced five-ply carton include?
Five-ply corrugated board is commonly called double-wall board. It combines three flat liners with two fluted layers. Put the proposed board grade, carton style and any required strength test or value on the packing specification. For stacked shipments, ask how the finished carton will be supported and whether box compression data are available for the proposed design. See FEFCO’s guide to corrugated board construction and its corrugated packaging test methods.
| Part or contact point | What to ask the supplier to show |
|---|---|
| Upright ends | End blocks or inserts that limit lengthwise movement and keep steel ends from pressing directly against the carton walls. |
| Beam connectors | Protection around projecting tabs or hooks, with dividers where beams or uprights would otherwise touch. |
| Long steel sections | A snug layout and spacers positioned to support the parts and keep coated faces from rubbing. Check how the long carton will be supported during stacking and handling. |
| Shelf panels and hardware | Corner protection for the panels, a secured hardware bag and a packing list that identifies which carton contains the fittings. |
Can one shelving set ship in two cartons?
A two-carton layout is one option. Carton 1 can hold the uprights, beams and compatible braces, while Carton 2 can hold the shelf panels and a secured hardware bag. Confirm that the long carton stays within the agreed handling weight. If it is too heavy or the parts need more separation, ask the factory to split the long components and quote the revised carton count.
For sets sold or picked individually, label both cartons with the same model or SKU and mark them Box 1 of 2 and Box 2 of 2. Add a matching set identifier if your receiving process pairs individual cartons. For orders shipped in bulk component bundles, ask for a packing list that shows how many complete sets the bundle counts make up.
How does carton packing affect 40HQ loading?
Measure the outside dimensions and gross weight of every sealed carton. Include pallets or other outer packing in the loading plan where used. Even when the total carton volume looks favorable, the longest box, the permitted stacking arrangement or the shipment’s payload can limit the number of complete sets that fit.
Illustrative calculation for one set in two cartons
The long-parts carton measures 2.05 × 0.19 × 0.14 m and weighs 18 kg gross. The shelf carton measures 1.95 × 0.58 × 0.12 m and weighs 24 kg gross.
Combined volume is about 0.190 m³ per set and combined gross weight is 42 kg per set, before any pallet or outer packing. These are example dimensions and weights. Ask for a 40HQ loading plan using your actual carton data and count complete sets that include every carton type.
When comparing a wrapped bundle with fully boxed parts, ask for the packaging charge and the loading estimate for each option. Use the same order quantity and shipping terms when comparing the total. For more about packed volume and container planning, see KAYOU’s guide to export packaging for knock-down steel furniture.
Approve a packed sample before bulk packing
Ask for photos of one complete set before the cartons are sealed and after labeling. Check the end protection, separation between coated surfaces, carton dimensions and gross weights against the packing specification. If you require transit testing, agree with the supplier and test provider on the packed sample, distribution route and acceptance criteria for damage and assembly fit. The ISTA test procedure directory distinguishes between different shipping environments.
Agree which items the pre-shipment inspector should verify on randomly selected sets, including carton contents, labels, packing materials and visible damage. See KAYOU’s quality-control overview and the SGS overview of final random inspection.
Packing wording to include in your RFQ
Please fully enclose the steel uprights and beams in reinforced five-ply corrugated cartons with end protection and dividers where parts may rub. Please confirm the carton grade, contents, outer dimensions and gross weight for each carton, as well as the total cartons per shelving set. Include the packing surcharge, photos of a packed sample and the estimated number of complete sets per 40HQ.
Request a shelving quote with reinforced carton packing
Send KAYOU your shelving dimensions, order quantity, destination and any carton weight or labeling requirements. Ask for the packing proposal, package dimensions and estimated container quantity for your selected model.
